My experiences living in Cape Town and travelling in Africa

It’s official, Table Mountain is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature

This morning I was privileged to attend the inauguration of Table Mountain as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The one thing about nature is that we can’t control it and the weather wasn’t the best with Table Mountain shrouded in cloud this was the view from Tafelberg Road at 6:45am as we arrived for the plaque unveiling at the Cableway’s lower station.

The low hanging cloud didn’t dampen the mood though as  Bernard Weber (Founder-President of New7Wonders) spoke about how the voting process had been a great example of democracy with great high levels of participation from all nations across the globe.

The official plaque was then unveiled by Patricia De Lille (Executive Mayor of Cape Town) and Bernard Weber (Founder-President of New7Wonders) together on stage with Sabine Lehmann (Managing Director of Table Mountain Cableway and chairperson of the Official Supporter’s Committee)and Jean-Paul de la Fuente (Director of New7Wonders).

I must admit I was a little sceptical as to how exciting a plaque unveiling would be but the plaque itself was a work of art and as I stood there listening to the speeches I suddenly felt very proud to be a Capetonian and to have been a part of the process.
With the formalities completed we took the cable car up to the Upper Cable Station for a celebratory breakfast in the Summit Lounge. As we waited our turn we all watched as the cable car before us rose up and disappeared into the cloud. A rather surreal scene and as someone commented behind me, “it looks like a cable way to heaven!”

As we sipped champagne and ate delicious breakfast snacks we got to mingle with and meet delegates from the other New 7 Wonders of Nature sites from around the world including the beautiful Ly Nha Ky (Tourism Ambassador for Vietnam) who was part of the successful promotion of the vote for Halong Bay as one of the other New 7 Wonders of Nature.

And now it’s official. Cape Town is home to one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and the most accessible one at that so let’s not take it for granted and enjoy it every chance we get.

  6. I bet that was an inspiring event to witness. For those views alone, I can see why Table Mountain is such a wonder.

  7. I bet it’s extremely beautiful and that’s why I’d go there! …not because it’s officially a “new 7th wonder”. But thanks for bringing us the story.

    • I agree with you. It’s beautiful in it’s own right and that is why we love it, for what it is, not it’s status.
